Substantial compliance is sufficient to effect a substitution. The party claiming the decedent/insured’s substantial compliance must prove that he or she did everything in his or her power to effect the change in the manner prescribed in the policy and nothing remained but the performance of a formality, a ministerial act, by the employer or insurance company.
